Why Typography Is the Most Underrated Part of Your Brand Identity

Most businesses spend weeks choosing a logo and minutes choosing a typeface. Here is why that is backwards and how to fix it.

Your logo appears on your website header, your business card, and a few other places. Your typography appears on every page of your website, every email you send, every document you produce, and every social post your team creates. Type does more work for your brand than any other element.

Type communicates personality before the words do

A serif typeface reads as established, authoritative, and considered. A geometric sans reads as modern, clean, and precise. A humanist sans reads as approachable and friendly. A display face with personality reads as distinctive and opinionated. None of these impressions require the reader to read a single word. The personality lands before the content does.

You need two typefaces, not one

Most brands need a display face for headings and a body face for reading. These can be from the same family or complementary families, but they need different visual weight and character. Using one typeface for everything is not minimalism. It is a missed opportunity to create hierarchy and range.

Type is the voice of your brand. If your logo is its face, your typeface is how it sounds in a room.

Choose for function first

Beautiful type that is hard to read at body sizes is not good brand typography. Test your chosen typeface at 16px on a phone screen before committing. It should be readable, distinct, and load fast. Web font performance matters especially on mobile connections in markets like Kenya where average speeds are lower.
